Electrical hook-up, window wall planking, and drywall delays

Hooray! The house is all hooked into the electrical grid.

I visited my parents for the first few days of my fall break, and when I pulled into the driveway upon returning home, I saw the guys and their trucks were here. While we don’t have all the fixtures installed yet, we do have service to the new house.

What we don’t have is Sheetrock on the walls. The drywall was delivered last Saturday a little after noon, and supposedly the hangers were going to come get started that same day. They didn’t, and then we were told it would be Tuesday. Then it was Thursday or Friday. Then it was noon on Saturday. It is now past 1:30 on Saturday, and there is still no drywall crew. It’s quite frustrating.

Husband managed to get a few things done, though. He hooked up some ductwork for the HRV.

He also started on the wood planking for the window wall. This is wood he had already milled for other purposes but didn’t use. We thought it would look really nice on that window wall, and it does! (Of course, there are stacks of drywall in the way, so he can’t get it all done until those are moved.)

The Illustrious Brother-in-Law came to measure for the kitchen cabinetry, which he will be installing. He said he was ordering that this week and that it should come in about three weeks. He’ll do some assembly before he brings it here, though I’m not sure how long that will take him.

Thursday, Husband and I went on a date, and when you’re building a house, every date includes a trip to Menards. We made some easy decisions on bathroom and kitchen sinks; then we browsed the paint section. It’s so handy that paint companies are making booklets with entire color palettes in them now. Having just sixteen colors that I know go together makes the decision process a lot easier for me. We brought home about a dozen booklets, which I quickly narrowed down to four. Then Husband picked out two, and then we decided on the winner. The harder part was determining which colors would go on which walls. There’s a green in the color palette that in a certain light looks bright and cheerful, but in other light looks like a dingy 1970’s avocado refrigerator. Mostly we are using off-white (“Heavy Cream”), grayish-blue (“Cathedral Glass”), golden (“More Maple”), tan (“Spiced Vinegar”), and a rusty red (“Cinnabar”). That green (“Globe Artichoke”) felt too risky to me, so I’m going with a brown instead (“Star Anise”). We like the names almost as much as we like the colors. Food and church? Count me in!

Husband is continuing to work on the wood planking as much as he can with that drywall in his way. He said that depending on when the drywallers come and what the weather does, he may spend time on the tongue-and-groove ceiling in some parts of the house or on the deck outside. We’ll see what the next week holds.
